Time: 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM
Palamountain Hall Emerson Auditorium: After graduating from Skidmore in 2013, Margaret earned two Masters degrees (M.Div from Harvard University; M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Goucher College) before she threw herself into the historical investigation resulting in her first book. Sitting squarely at the intersection of public health and public schooling, the topic of sex ed often spills into heated discussions of religion and morality that test the permeable boundaries between church and state. Ms. Meyers will talk about her research and consider what a historically informed perspective can offer us moving forward.

Whole Grain: Kunsang Kyirong
Time: 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM
TANG Somers: Join us Thursday, March 19, at 6 pm, for a Whole Grain: Experiments in Film & Video screening of 100 Sunset (Canada, 2025, video, 99 min.), Tibetan-Canadian filmmaker Kunsang Kyirong’s thrilling debut feature set in a Tibetan immigrant community outside of Toronto. Kyirong will introduce the film and answer questions following. This screening is co-presented by the Department of Asian Studies, Media & Film Studies, and the Tang.About the FilmKunsel (Tenzin Kunsel) is an introverted young woman living in the Tibetan immigrant community of west Toronto, where she commits petty theft and spies on her neighbors through a camcorder. However, when newcomer Passang (Sonam Choekyi) moves into the neighborhood with her much older husband, Kunsel is gradually drawn out of her solitary, watchful existence. The presence of a dhikuti—a communal lending practice in which participants contribute a fixed monthly sum to be redistributed back to community members—adds a $200,000 payout to an already volatile mix of intrigue and betrayal.Titled after the apartment complex address around which the film is set, Kunsang Kyirong’s auspicious debut feature is a richly detailed portrait of Toronto’s Tibetan Canadian community, as well as a fascinating character study of two women alienated in more ways than one. Reminiscent of the icy post-Hitchcockian thrillers of Claude Chabrol, this is the rare film whose enigmas only deepen as it unfolds. (Description from the Vancouver International Film Festival.)“At once precise and suggestive, 100 Sunset vibrates on dual frequencies of intimacy and unease that make it one of the most accomplished Canadian debuts in recent memory” (Toronto Star).Kunsang KyirongKunsang Kyirong is a Tibetan-Canadian filmmaker. Her debut feature 100 Sunset premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, where it was the recipient of the Best Canadian Discovery Award-Honorable Mention. Her work has exhibited at The Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art, The Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia, and elsewhere. She lives in Montreal.About Whole GrainThe Tang Museum’s Whole Grain series explores classic and contemporary work in experimental film and video. Psychology Colloquium Talk
Time: 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM
Palamountain Hall Davis Auditorium: "Heroes in Search of Monsters: How Outrage Shapes a Moral, Meaningful, and Clear Self"We all want to see ourselves as good people whose lives matter. Yet our everyday routines—what we buy, click, and support—are tangled up with harms we rarely see. Building on Ernest Becker’s idea that people seek heroic meaning, this talk asks: how do we protect a clear moral identity in such a world? I present research showing that moral outrage can serve that purpose. When we feel unsure about our own goodness or meaning, drawing sharp lines between right and wrong and opposing clear wrongdoers can restore a sense of moral clarity and meaning. Using evidence from experiments, I’ll show when outrage steadies the self, for whom it works, and where it can mislead—by assuaging responsibility and undermining meaningful action. The goal is understanding, not dismissal: when is outrage a moral compass, and when is it a mirror?
Ellie Ushakov Senior Recital
Time: 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM
ZANKEL Helen Filene Ladd Concert Hall: Ellie Amelia Ushakov is a senior music major at 鶹ýվ. She can be found on stage—performing with Classical Guitar Ensemble, Old Time String Band, People Who Sing, or as one half of folk duo Question of the Century—and off-stage, pursuing her love of sound engineering as Technical Director at Lively Lucy’s and as a teacher’s assistant in Zankel’s own Grossman Recording Studio. Mainly studying science and ballet while in high school, Ellie picked up guitar in late 2019, initially to play in a Beatles parody band with her friends. Shortly after, inspired by the ‘60s and ‘70s folk revival, she began writing original songs. She soon realized that connecting with people through the shared emotional experience of music was more fulfilling than anything she had ever done before. In college, Ellie continues performing as a singer-songwriter, while taking lessons in classical guitar, mandolin, and voice. This recital includes collaborations with Owen Delaney (classical guitar), Asher Gordon (classical guitar), Francis Davies (banjo and vocal harmonies), Rimmele Wood ’25 (guitar), Natalie Jones (fiddle), Frankie Belden (fiddle), John Kirk (mandolin and guitar), Joel Brown (guitar), Alex Ciardullo ’25 (drums), Thayer Ross (upright bass), and Jackson Giumarro (mandolin), with additional members of the Skidmore Old Time String Band joining for the finale.Presented by the Department of MusicRSVP encouraged!

Dunkerley Dialogue with Kathy Butterly, Elena Sisto, and Matthew Wilt
Time: 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM
TANG Payne: Join us Thursday, April 9, at 6 pm, for a Dunkerley Dialogue with sculptor Kathy Butterly, whose works are on view in her solo exhibition Kathy Butterly: Assume Yes, in conversation with painter Elena Sisto, and Matthew Wilt, Robert Davison Chair in Art and Associate Professor of Ceramics at 鶹ýվ.Dunkerley Dialogues pair Skidmore professors with artists in a conversation format, which is often a catalyst for new connections and understandings across disciplines, and can spark new ideas for all participants. Dunkerley Dialogues are made possible by a generous gift from Michele Dunkerley ’80.This event is free and open to the public. The program will include ASL interpretation.About the SpeakersKathy Butterly is a sculptor who has reimagined the tradition of studio ceramics for nearly four decades. She begins with a traditional ceramic form, which she calls her “canvas,” and twists, compresses, and reshapes it into expressive and unexpected sculptures. Layered glazes and repeated firings give her works rich color and texture, creating pieces that can feel both playful and unsettling. Rather than working on a large scale, Butterly focuses on small, highly individual sculptures that suggest movement, personality, and emotion. Born in 1963 in Amityville, New York, she has exhibited widely in the United States and abroad. Her work is held in major museum collections, including The Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She lives and works in New York and Maine.Elena Sisto is a painter known for her figurative works that center the lived experiences of women. Her paintings explore identity, memory, and the nuances of everyday life. She earned her BA in Art from Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design and also studied at the New York Studio School, the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and Yale Norfolk. Sisto has received numerous honors, including a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Biennial Grant, a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, and National Endowment for the Arts Visual Artist Fellowships. She has been the subject of solo exhibitions at institutions including the Maier Museum, the Greenville County Museum of Art, the American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center, and the Miami-Dade Museum of Art and Design. Her work is held in public and private collections, and she lives and works in New York City and Milan, New York.Matthew Wilt is a ceramic artist and the Robert Davison Chair in Art and Associate Professor of Ceramics at 鶹ýվ. His work engages material history, surface, and architectural influence through sculptural and vessel-based forms. He earned his BFA in Ceramics and Art Education from Penn State University and his MFA from Ohio University, and early professional experiences at Boston Valley Terra Cotta and Moravian Pottery and Tileworks shaped his sustained interest in plaster mold making, imitative glaze surfaces, and architectural ornament. Wilt has exhibited nationally and internationally, and his work has received numerous honors, including grants from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and the Illinois Arts Council. His pieces are held in public collections such as the de Young Museum, the Crocker Art Museum, and the Ceramic Research Center at Arizona State University. He lives and works in New York.
